An Australian cafe owner withdrew $10,000 cash to give away to strangers he saw on the news lining up for financial assistance.
Australian café owner
Pete Darmos was forced to close up his café in Melbourne, Australia due to the pandemic. Despite his business’ closure, he still lends out a helping hand to those who are in need. For him, it was just a way to pass along the blessing that he received when he was still an immigrant in the country.
While the 62-year-old “Generous Pete” was watching the news one day, he felt compelled to help. Pete saw people lining up outside the social security offices across the city on television. Those people have been left jobless because of the COVID-19, each seeking financial help from the government.

$100 for unemployed strangers
Moved by what he has seen on the news, he went out to withdraw $10,000 cash from his bank. Pete then started to give out $100 cash to everyone lined up near Centrelink location in Box Hill.
“I started at the back of the queue and then basically handed everybody a $100 note,” Pete said in an interview. “There were tears and disbelief. $100 is not a lot of money, but four or five bags of food meant a lot to these people.”
Generous Pete
When referred to as a legend and labeled as the “Generous Pete,” he humbly explained what urged him to do such a deed.
“I am not a legend, I’m just an ordinary Australian citizen just looking to lend a helping hand,” Pete said. “We arrived here as immigrants, I was 6-years-old starving from hunger. So I am not a legend, I’m just so grateful about this country as for me and my family.”
The Australian cafe owner hopes to inspire others to show compassion to those who needed help during this global pandemic.
